Charles is unique. Intelligent, insightful and incredibly
stylish! A designer, antique hunter, and all round culture
vulture, Charles’ first foray into presenting was as
the resident expert alongside Carol Vorderman on the ITV1 Daytime
show The Golden Lot. On the show,
he was able to display his formidable knowledge and easy
manner whilst revealing in depth information about a broad
range of antiques and design collectables; from a jacket
belonging to a member of Run DMC to a piece of Nelson’s
HMS Victory to a rare plywood chair designed by Alvar Aalton
for a Finnish sanitarium. Charles was involved in sourcing
the objects during the shows conception and production.
He opened his first compact design shop, Anatomy in
Shoreditch in 2002 which led to his designing
projects for Warp Records, and a number
of bars in the area (including The Redchurch
Bar and No One), the most recent of which
is Green and Red, a traditional Mexican
Taverna. He is now working on further design
projects including a Cuban members bar
with all the interior furniture and fittings
to be sourced from Havana. A line of specialist
furniture, Tomorrow, is
going into production along with a line
in bed linen.
The ever growing area of modern design
collecting has also led Charles to source
a number of unusual pieces for private
collectors- the most notable of which is
a rare pre-production shell chair by Danish
master Hans Wegner.
As a one time guitar player and songwriter
in the band The Paradise Motel,
and then as a record producer in Melbourne,
Charles’ knowledge is not limited
to design and antiques alone. A keen music
and literature boff, his other interests
include fishing, cricket, eating and ‘gaming’ and
he is incredibly proud of his 1983 Mercedes
230TE that once belonged to the Syrian
embassy.
Throughout his childhood he spent time
living in Australia, America and the UK.
His antique dealer mother instilled an
interest in design (from Architecture and
decor, to collectable items) and his US
airforce father fostered an ordered attitude
to information. Charles is an inspiring
person, with an infectious enthusiasm to
his subject matter. In front of the camera
he is informative and totally accessible.
He is young, cool and is a real character
on screen.
